Frequently Asked Quest-ions

What is a collaborative storytelling game (Dungeons & Dragons)?

If you've watched Stranger Things, you've seen the most commonly known role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, in action.

Simply put, tabletop role-playing is a form of collaborative storytelling governed by rules that simulate unpredictability and fate.

In role-playing games, players have complete agency to interact with a world that exists in their collective imagination.

The Quest Guide (or Game Master, as it's commonly known) narrates the story, enforces the rules, and works alongside the players to create fantastical locales, intimidating monsters, and breathtaking moments of action and suspense.

We've done everything possible to simplify this format to the bare minimum––just enough rules to keep the game fair and engaging while remaining fast-paced and collaborative at the core.

I'm concerned that my team will think this is "too nerdy" or hard to learn.

We run a deeply simplified and refined version of D&D tailored for team-building that anyone can learn in 5 minutes or less. The game, both in action and out of it, moves fast with minimal dice-rolling and focuses heavily on storytelling, relationship-building, and decision-making.

No need to be 'in' on D&D culture.

Role-playing has grown exponentially in popularity in recent years, especially among creatives and technical workers, while shaking off some undeserved stigma. These games are for EVERYONE––our system is intentionally designed to be instantly accessible to anyone, regardless of experience.

How do I know if my team will like this?

They will. Literally 100% of our players thus far (regardless of personality, background, and experience with the format) say QuestWorks was more fun than they expected, and they'd fully recommend it to other teams.

Our advice? Don't ask their opinion and just have them show up for a Quest Starter demo. Make it mandatory to try out just like any other L&D program. They're guaranteed to have a blast.

What does a typical session look like?

We begin the session by establishing safety protocols and game etiquette, teaching the essential rules, and taking a brief workplace strengths assessment which assigns each player their "Hero Type". Then, we dive right into the story, creating characters and building the world on the fly!

Players get XP toward leveling up for being excellent collaborators and creators. They'll even get bonus XP for taking actions that reflect professional growth for their Hero Type.

Afterwards, we discuss what was accomplished, what was learned, and how the in-game events may have inspired interesting ideas for real-life application.

How is QuestWorks different?

QuestWorks is the antithesis to the existing remote team experience and L&D marketplace.

In place of mass-market solutions that lump hundreds of employees in an automated activity, we run sessions with small groups. This allows people to actually get engaged and grow their bond.

And, where other activities are shallow and do little to emulate an 'in person experience', QuestWorks games create real memories your team members will share long after the session ends.

Instead of primarily offering one-off experiences for yearly team days, our preferred approach is an quarterly sprints, where real results can take root for synergy, culture, and bond.

Lastly, in place of lengthy personality and strengths assessments, players get to learn about themselves and each other as they go, through practical application in a low-stakes environment.

QuestWorks was built to be the unique perk for remote teams.

Is this an automated service?

Nope! These are live-facilitated, small group events led by experienced storytellers and team-builders with deep knowledge of the QuestWorks methodology.

Why not just have my team play video/online games together?

Role-playing/collaborative storytelling is entirely different from video games (and far more effective for team empowerment) for several reasons:

1. Because role-playing games are so visceral and immersive, the memories made and stories told (especially with a collective such as a team or group of friends) are almost impossible to forget. Like a vivid, incredible dream that sticks around long after you wake up... but all of your coworkers remember it, too!

2. Role-playing games offer players complete agency––meaning that their personal values, viewpoints, and loyalties will be tested.

3. In role-playing, your team members will be interacting directly with each other.

People learn best through stories––and their ability to internalize their learning is directly related to their involvement in the story. Role-playing games maximize this opportunity.

How many players can play at once?

We find that adventuring parties excel in groups of 3-5. Luckily, we have a roster of talented, engaging, and thoroughly trained Quest Guides to lead your teams. We can divide groups of up to ~50+ players into 5-person parties, playing simultaneously or at different times.

The coolest part? Even if your team is divided into small groups, they'll still quest in the same 'world' they build together—with a shared 'main quest' and the ability to impact each other's experiences and environments through their actions.

They'll see each other's team-wide level progress on their shared dashboard—to inspire some friendly competition for stronger collaboration!

Plus, it gives them all something to talk about between sessions, chatting about memorable moments and strategizing their next moves.

What happens after the first 90 days?

We're confident you'll see measurable results in your team dynamics after the first quarter of play—but most of our clients keep going! The professional growth and benefits to your culture are endless. You can even mix up the groups to make more connections.

But, if you're satisfied with the massive change you observe in the first 90 days, you can switch to a 'maintenance' plan of biweekly or monthly games (or 30-minute weekly games) to keep the spark alive and camaraderie consistent.

We have D&D players on our team. Why not run this ourselves?

QuestWorks is not your typical D&D experience.

1. It’s designed from the ground up for team empowerment, with proprietary methods and facilitation techniques engineered to drive professional and personal development, team cohesion, and creative inspiration.

2. The storytelling is completely improvised and collaborative, requiring facilitation skills not always possessed by traditional Dungeon Masters. Our Quest Guides are trained in our specific methodology and run sessions in pursuit of distinct goals.

3. Our facilitators possess expertise in workplace strengths, dynamics, and safety procedures to ensure inclusive, engaging, and effective gameplay. Plus, our system is far more beginner-friendly than D&D 5e, meaning you can easily bring new team members into the fold.

4. Ideally, everyone on your team should be playing as the adventuring party, without any individual leading the session or being 'removed' from the team synergy. Additionally, external facilitators are able to spot and address problematic dynamics and opportunities for growth that may be missed by internal facilitators.

Our Quest Guides are team-building facilitators first, "Game Masters" second.

Icon - Elements Webflow Library - BRIX Templates
What materials do we need to play?

None at all. The game takes place in the Theater of the Mind––and we use a platform called Role (playrole.com) to facilitate a high-quality video call with access to character sheets, dice, and other resources.

Just show up with an open mind and a positive attitude!

How are Quest Guides certified?

Our Quest Guides are the cream of the crop, with combined centuries (not joking) of professional game master experience.

We have Certified Therapeutic Dungeon Masters in our ranks, as well as Agile Scrum Masters, certified teambuilders, theatre professors, and even some who have published their own RPG systems.

In addition to our selective hiring process, Quest Guides undergo training in the QuestWorks methodology, safety procedures, and Hero Type system so they can apply insights universally and get consistent results.

Not to mention, many of our Quest Guides have worked in marketing, running their own agencies and freelance shops. So, your team will be in familiar company.

You're in fantastic hands.
